You’ve decided that you would like to learn about something, so you do a Search engines search. You choose one of many results that Google has called up for you and visit it. Then, when the site finishes loading, big surprise! Instead of finding the page that is designed to have the content you need, you are forced to cope with a pop up. This is an advertising campaign that refuses to be shut down no matter how hard you try–until you enter in your e-mail address into it. Eventually you are so upset that you just shut down your internet browser altogether. The website manager has won!

So many people really really can’t stand pop ups and they have a good reason to feel that way. They’re irritating. They intrude on your net use. If they play sound they can get you in trouble with your employer (or anybody else in the room). They offer ridiculous things. They need your personal data if you want them to go away. Some even decide to put malware and cookies inside your computer systems. There are very few folks who really enjoy being confronted by these annoying things and yet, so many Internet Marketers use them. Why is this?

The real truth is that IMers use pop up ads because they get the job done. They command attention. They help IMers build their e-mail marketing directories. It’s been proven again and again that pop up ads get more opt ins than a regular opt in box put into the sidebar or even into the body of a site. They have even been known to help produce sales. Unfortunately, these silly web pests really get the job done and, until somebody thinks of something better, most IMers are going to keep using them.

Of course, that doesn’t means that most Online marketers should continue to use them. What is the value of an e-mail address that’s only gotten through duress? Usually what happens is the person just opts back out of your list as soon as they get the first e-mail from you or your company. Can your traffic be of high quality when nearly all of it clicks out of your site because they are offended by the pop ups assaulting them? Of course you want to generate profits but really–is this the only method to do it? There has to be a better option for someone who would like to make and build an e-mail list to help them sell things.

The truth is simply this: if you have a good item, you aren’t going to need a pop up if you can present that product well. Concentrate on making a very high quality product so that you don’t have to depend on irritating pop up ads to do the job for you. Write a great sales or splash page. Grab the reader’s attention then never give it back using just the power behind your copy and site content. The simple truth is that Online marketers only find success and online revenue when they make products that others are going to find valuable. No pop up ad may be substituted to cover up the lack of value in a product.
